Lorain County History

Lorain County was formed in 1822 from parts of Cuyahoga, Medina, and Huron counties and was officially organized in 1824, when the county’s first Commissioners’ meeting was held on May 24. Heman Ely, an early settler in the area, was reminded of the Lorraine region of France, which is connected to the county’s name. Ely also helped establish Elyria in 1817.
